Sir Alexander Mackenzie Reaches the Pacific Ocean
On July 22, 1793, Sir Alexander Mackenzie became the first person to complete a transcontinental crossing, both of Canada and the North American continent north of Mexico. He reached the Pacific Ocean at present day Bella Coola on the BC Coast and wrote his name on a rock in Dean Channel before turning back. This was a full twelve years before the American expedition of Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific.
