815 · Strategic Assessment: The latest assessments show the problem of America’s THAAD missile stockpile as almost insoluble. In 2024, after nearly 20 years of preparation, the United States had a stockpile of up to 534 THAAD interceptors. The Emiratis had between 190 and 290 missiles and the Saudis had a stockpile of unknown size. The ammunition depletion began last summer and accelerated this year with the all-out attack on Iran by the US and the Israeli regime. During the 10 months of conflict, the US has burned through a stockpile of THAAD missiles that took about nine years to build. According to estimates, about 80 percent of that stockpile has been destroyed. Each THAAD missile costs about $12 million. Each THAAD interceptor is assembled essentially by hand, piece by piece, at the Lockheed Martin factory in Troy, Alabama. Rows of half-assembled missiles line the factory floor, and workers carefully attach new parts. If a faulty connection or a faulty circuit board is found, the result is worse than nothing. The THAAD production chain involves hundreds of suppliers who provide microchips, infrared sensors, rocket motors, and specialized fuel propellants. The Pentagon hopes to invest billions of dollars in further production, a project that could be completed by 2030 at best. The main problem is that THAAD was never designed to protect a country for the long term. The US military wanted it for only one limited mission: to survive the first wave of missile attacks, so that fighters and destroyers had time to respond. That is, it assumed that the war would end quickly and that there was no need for a huge stockpile of missiles. For this reason, the Pentagon ordered a limited number of THAAD missiles from the beginning and never built a stockpile that would last a long war. This structural deficiency became apparent as the war with Iran dragged on, with missiles that cost $12 million each and take years to build being used up in a few months and there was no replaceme
