"In August, German reserves accounted for only 47% of the country's total underground gas storage capacity—the lowest level of storage capacity on record. Given the size of the German economy, a gas shortage in the country could impact neighboring countries and lead to higher prices across the bloc if it fails to replenish its reserves. The country accounts for over 20% of the EU's total storage capacity. There are growing calls for the German government to directly intervene and force state-controlled energy giants to purchase gas at any price, thereby abandoning a long-standing policy based on free-market principles in the energy sector."
