🏅 Nobel Prize 2026 | Physiology or Medicine
Light switches for the brain: Optogenetics
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine goes to Karl Deisseroth (Stanford, USA), Peter Hegemann (Humboldt University of Berlin) and Georg Nagel (University of Würzburg) "for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics."
✅ What is optogenetics?
A technique that uses light to switch specific nerve cells ON or OFF
✅ The science: Light-sensitive proteins from algae (channelrhodopsins) open or close ion channels, changing a neuron's electrical activity
✅ Who did what: Hegemann studied channelrhodopsins in algae, Nagel showed they can control cells with light, and Deisseroth turned it into a tool for living brains
✅ Why it's revolutionary: Cell-specific, millisecond-fast and far more precise than older methods
✅ Medical promise: Parkinson's, epilepsy, depression, blindness research and other brain disorders
Indo-French TRISHNA Mission
🛰️ 1. About the TRISHNA Mission
➡️ TRISHNA is a collaborative Earth-observation satellite mission between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES).
➡️ Its primary purpose is to use high-resolution thermal infrared imaging to assess natural resources and monitor the Earth’s surface.
➡️ The mission has been under conceptualisation and formalisation for approximately a decade, and has now reached the realisation stage, according to the report.
🤝 2. India–France Space Cooperation
➡️ TRISHNA is described as the third satellite developed jointly by India and France, following:
➡️ 🛰️ Megha-Tropiques: A joint mission focused on studying the water cycle and energy exchanges in the tropical atmosphere.
➡️ 🛰️ SARAL (Satellite with ARgos and ALtika): A joint oceanographic mission that measures ocean-surface height and studies ocean circulation.
➡️ TRISHNA reflects the continuing scientific and technological partnership between India and France in space research.
🌡️ 3. Significance of TRISHNA
➡️ 🌾 Agriculture: Thermal observations can help assess crop water stress and support irrigation planning.
➡️ 💧 Water management: Surface temperature and evapotranspiration measurements can help improve water-resource assessment.
➡️ 🌳 Ecosystem monitoring: Satellite observations can help study vegetation health and environmental changes.
➡️ 🌍 Climate research: High-resolution thermal data can support research on land-surface processes and climate-related impacts.
➡️ 📊 Natural-resource management: Better observations can support evidence-based planning for land, water and vegetation.
