First, what is a fork?
Bitcoin is constantly evolving. Changes to the protocol are proposed through Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs). If a proposal is accepted and changes the network's validation rules, Bitcoin may adopt a new set of rules.
When the new rules remain compatible with older nodes, the upgrade is called a soft fork. Older nodes can continue operating, while newer nodes enforce additional restrictions.
