New SparkToro data: 68% of US Google searches now end without a single click. People get the answer right on the page and never visit anyone. Google is answering more inside its own interface now. AI overviews show on over 20% of searches and cut click-throughs by around 60% when they appear. For years the whole job was earning the click. Now two-thirds of the time there's no click left to earn. If you're not in the answer, you don't exist. Where does that leave everyone still chasing the click? More in our June digest: Read ↩️

For years a hyphen in a domain carried a whiff of spam. It's how throwaway sites and knock-offs often looked, so the clean version became the one everyone chased. Google's John Mueller, a Search Advocate at Google, keeps setting the record straight: hyphens don't help your rankings and they don't hurt them. Search engines don't favour clean domains or punish hyphenated ones. What actually moves rankings is the quality of the site, not one dash sitting in the address. So if the name you love is only free with a hyphen, that's a fair trade, as long as it still reads clean and people can remember it. That poor dash has been carrying decades of undeserved shame.

India just handed part of its domain security to AI. NIXI, the body that runs the country's .in space, launched a platform that reads new registrations as they happen and flags the fingerprints of phishing and fraud before the bad ones settle in. The same AI wave that helps criminals spin up fake domains faster is now aimed back at catching them. An arms race where both sides raid the same toolbox.

In 2015 a man bought Google.сom for twelve dollars. Checkout actually went through, and for about a minute the world's biggest domain sat in his account as purchased. Then Google cancelled the transaction. They offered him a reward for reporting it, around $6,000, then doubled it when he said he'd give the money to charity. Picture the receipt: "Google.сom, $12.00," filed between a phone bill and a parking ticket. Is this the best-paid minute in internet history, or can you top it?

Looking back at this year's Prime Day: Check Point researchers counted nearly 7,000 (!!) Amazon-themed domains registered in the months before the sale opened on June 23. Around one in eleven were flagged as malicious or suspicious. Big sales bring phishing crews out in force. A ticking countdown turns careful people into fast clickers. The address bar is worth a look before you click: an extra word tacked on, or a letter swapped to look almost right. It won't catch everything, subdomains and lookalike characters can slip past, but it's a cheap first check.

The SEO question used to be where you rank. Now it's also whether you show up in the answer. Plenty of searches end without a click, so being named in an AI reply can matter alongside sitting high on the page. How those answers get assembled is its own puzzle, and plenty of signals feed into it.

Every couple of years someone declares the domain name dead. Apps, search, now Al. But every one of those killers still lives at an address: the app has a website, the search result points to a domain, the Al answer was built from pages that mostly needed a name. DNS and domain names are still core infrastructure under the apps, the search, and the Al systems meant to replace them. For a corpse, it stays pretty busy.

A lot of the tech names you know run on a country's ccTLD. .io is the country code for a tiny British territory in the Indian Ocean. .ai belongs to Anguilla, a Caribbean island of about 15,000 people. Neither was built for startups. They just happened to spell what the tech world wanted, and a whole aesthetic grew out of a spelling coincidence. Anguilla now funds a real chunk of its national budget on those registrations, a whole island cashing in because its country code looked sharp on a logo. A national economy built on good spelling.

Does your site need the "www" or not? Short answer: pick one and stick with it. Technically yourdomain.сom and www.yourdomain.сom can behave like two separate addresses. If both load on their own without redirecting to one version, you can split your traffic and confuse search engines. Choose your preferred version, send the other to it, done. Team www, or team bare domain?

An XML sitemap is the table of contents you hand a search engine: here's every page worth knowing about. Most site builders generate one automatically now. The thing to remember is checking it after big changes. An outdated map can point search engines at pages that have moved and add noise, though for a big or brand-new site, having no map at all can be the bigger problem.

Nothing says "nobody's home" like clicking a link on a business site and landing on a 404. The digital version of a shop with its lights on and the door locked. Broken links just pile up. A page gets renamed here, deleted there, and the site fills with small dead ends. A link check every few months is usually enough. When did you last check yours?

Underrated habit: when you move a page, update the actual links pointing to it. Don't just lean on redirects to carry the load. Redirects are a backup for when you miss one. Leaning on them for every link just piles up problems later. A string of five redirects to reach one page is slow, fragile, and tends to break later. Point internal links straight at the real destination and things run cleaner. Do you keep yours tidy, or is it a someday job?

The it.соm Domains team is back from Domain Summit Europe 2026, which took place in Kempten, Germany. A big thank you to Domain Summit Europe team for creating a space for candid conversations about where the domain industry is heading — from AI-driven discovery to the changing role of trust and domain value. With only around 65 participants, the intimate format was a real advantage: fewer formal introductions, more time for meaningful conversations and connections that continued well beyond the panels. Special thanks to Helmuts Meškonis for the care and effort he put into bringing the right people together.

Launching a site change straight to the live version with no test run takes a certain confidence. Roughly the confidence of cutting your own hair the night before a wedding. A staging environment is just a private copy where you can break things safely first. Test the move there, and launch day comes with a lot fewer surprises.

A problem we run into: a company's main domain registered under one employee's personal account. Fine, right up until that person leaves on bad terms and takes the keys with them. Keep it in a company-owned account, with the right people given their own access through it. Boring to set up, priceless the day you need it.

The global chess community could soon have a name of its own online, if a new application to ICANN is approved, and we're proud to be the Registry Service Provider behind it! FIDE and World Chess have jointly applied for a new .chess domain. If approved, it would give the community, over 600 million people, one name that's recognisably theirs. As World Chess CEO Ilya Merenzon put it, chess has everything a major sport needs, except its own name on the internet. it.com Domains is acting as the Registry Service Provider to make it possible. Moving your site to a new domain is a bit like a house move. The stuff you forget to redirect is the stuff you'll be hunting for months later. The part that's easy to skip: telling search engines where everything went. Without redirects mapping old pages to new ones, users and search engines keep landing on the old URLs, hit nothing, and gradually stop coming back, taking years of built-up traffic with them. The redirects need to be ready and switched on by the time you launch. Ever moved a site and watched the traffic dip before it climbed back?

A 301 redirect is a change-of-address card for the internet. It tells browsers and search engines "this page moved, here's where it lives now," and carries most of the old page's reputation across too. Skip it, and old links hit a dead end. Small step, saves a lot of pain later.
