DiscussTN is better than TN 'stemwinders', which term came to mind because they used that for long political speeches. The more local the politics, the more likely it being worth doing. We have new people in office in our rural county; friend Dawn has spent time dealing with chicken law and overstepping inspectors; friend Ryan had some federal level official running off-leash trying to get to his family cause He Was Basically A Cop (no he's not), people barking for Growth vague and fast in rural counties like it's gonna put a chicken in every pot and cure meemaws diabeetus. If it is about two party national or state politics instead, might as well call it The Cry Room.

Okay I like the idea of Discuss TN think that is the best idea so far.

TN Navel Gazers? TN Master Debaters? TN Outrage Olympics? TN Virtue Signaling Competition?

Keeping political discourse out of this channel, thats my vote. If you are about politics you arent about freedom, just choosing which color collar gets put on your neck. We are about freedom here.

Long time lurker, not sure if I've posted before though. Does anyone have a point of contact to buy emu or ostrich chicks anywhere around Tellico plains? Semi related, does anyone have experience keeping a llama or donkey, with the express purpose of having something to counter dog/ coyote issues? Lots of land but lacking fencing atm. Canines have been the bane of my homesteading efforts out here and while improving my infrastructure and trapping will go a long way I've had repeated failures with training up guard dogs and clearly lack the required expertise. Curious if something that lacks prey drive but is automatically hostile to canines would help me out or be another complication.

Mini donkeys are actually not a bad option for livestock protection

Do they keep to an area well? 15 acres is mine but over 100 around is a friends so there's abundant space, though idk how much they wander

I have two guardian donkeys with my sheep flock (30 to 50 depending on time of year) Or greatest threat to the flock are coyotes and loose dogs. Lots to convey here: this was a bit of an experiment. All donkeys seem to have a natural dislike of canines. But they won't necessarily protect the sheep but act more as a deterrent. If they can catch the offender, they will shake it to death. Canines also seem to understand how the donkey feels about them. I used to see coyotes regularly on the farm before the sheep and donks arrived, but haven't seen any in years now. I know they're still around, though. I hear their chorus at night when there's sirens on the road. But donkeys can also turn on the flock for any number of reasons. A few times I've caught Primrose (female standard donkey) picking up a sheep by the neck scruff. Best I've determined, it's happened when she feels crowded. Has also happened when someone brought her treats, and fed a treat to a sheep as well - food jealousy. Her biggest beef is with the sire ram, Bobby, who often seems to aggravate her. Pushes on her, leans, etc. Since we've added a second female donkey (Clover) Prim has chilled out and I haven't noticed any misbehavior. In fact, she's very protective of Clover now, who we've been rehabbing. This is year 3 that she's been with this flock. Second donkey joined at the end of April. Donkeys can be trained for protection duties- and the price is steep for ones that are well trained. We took a chance with Prim and somewhere along the way, she decided she was their guardian. If she hears coyotes or senses anything out of the ordinary, she'll round the sheep into a corner and put herself between them and the threat. Hard to say what could happen if there were multiple predators, though. Lastly, our flock is managed within 3 stands of polywire. Not much in the way of perimeter fence is left around here. She's very respectful of the fence, but I wouldn't try to run

Join me for a walk on our West Knox County, Tennessee farm, Bluebird Hill, to peruse through pastures and along wood lines to explore the variety of edible, medicinal and otherwise useful plants that grow in our region.
