📰 Valve's Work On Foveated Rendering For The Open-Source Turnip Driver On The Steam Frame As part of Valve's work on developing the Steam Frame VR headset, they worked on foveated rendering support for the Mesa Turnip driver that supports the Qualcomm Adreno graphics with open-source Vulkan API support. Foveated rendering is the technique to more closely mimic human vision by rendering high detail at your direct gaze point and lower quality in the peripheral vision. 🔗 Source: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Steam-Frame-Turnip-Foveated #opensource #steam

📰 The Amazing Work By Valve's Timur Kristóf On Improving Old AMD GPUs On Linux Over the past year Timur Kristóf of Valve's Linux graphics driver team has made multiple very nice improvements to the AMDGPU kernel driver for enhancing support for old (GCN 1.0/1.1 era from a decade ago) graphics cards so that they can better handle Linux gaming and other tasks. This week in Toronto, Kristóf presented on this AMDGPU work that he initially began as a kernel driver development exercise after initially spending years in... 🔗 Source: https://www.phoronix.com/news/XDC-2026-Valve-Timur-AMDGPU #amd #kernel #linux

Linuxgram 🐧📰 Rusticl Had A Great Year For Rust OpenCL In Mesa With 3.1 Support, More Drivers Rusticl lead developer Karol herbst provided a status update on this Mesa Rust-based OpenCL driver during the XDC 2026 conference happening in Toronto... 🔗 Source: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Rusticl-2026 #rust
I still don't really understand why we need Rust for that. 🤷‍♀️ I mean, C and C++ do support multithreading. It is not like it is hard to do it. A bit much boilerplatecode maybe (for me personally) but it can easily be done if you do proper bookkeeping.

If I would call out one downside of using more Rust (other than C getting a slight edge in performance which matters if done well): Rust is less transparant. It is a higher level language than C and that also comes with the downside of being less transparant, being more a black box. Yes, a good programmer knows exactly what happens but less skilled programmers easily can make wrong assumptions or not think at all about what happens and then you get bugs and undesired effects. Whether that will be a problem for a project like this remains to be seen but it is a reasonably expected risk in my opinion. In software like in engineering in general it all is about abstraction layers, for nothing this applies more than computers and programming. The advantage: abstraction makes it possible to work efficiently because you don't have to think about what exactly happens so you can get work done. Downside: it makes it easy to work sloppily and guess instead of know and understand. The ideal engineer learned what happens on the lower layers and then uses the abstraction on the higher layer. It is why many great programmers agree that you should learn assembly even if you write in Rust or Java or whatever.

Are you aware, that you just make up random arguments because Rust is woke for you? What is this for an argument about a language being transparent? It is a very explicit language, less skilled programmers can actually learn programming really well, because the compiler is their babysitter. You can write low level code with Rust e.g. asm! macro or unsafe in general and work with high-level abstractions e.g. with crates. So really, don't make stuff up just because you want to nitpick a language...
  2. D
Saying Rust is less transparent and like a black box is something I would expect from someone who hasn't learned the Rust at all The Rust book (e.g. this one) actually does a very good job at explaining how things work behind the scenes. I would say it's even better than some of C/C++ resources I learned on my college years, especially if you're doing self-study I can still tolerate C, but I think C++ is an abomination of its own. I would rather code in Rust instead for new project Also I disagree that Rust dev would make more mistakes than C/C++ dev. At beginner level it's probably the opposite, and at senior level you're expected to know the quirks of each language already

have you used it? almost everything eaten or worn today are from factories and most have little to no proper human interventions, with so many unhealthy ingredients, yet it is eaten or worn whole heartedly??? is it the devs of gimp or pinta or krita that will honour the development of photoshop like features or support to this extent? now, someone decide to meet a need using AI, bypassing and/or replacing devs and you call it slop? then roll up your sleeves and get in the mud, if not, if there is a criteria of people useful, you may not make the cut... bottom line, we will all have to deal with AI, just like we made our deals and/or compromises with the internet...

If I had to choose between GIMP and Photosite, I'd pick Photosite. I don't care whether they use AI

exactly, I don't argue against the school of thought that tech will ultimately bring doom or that they will be ultimately used for nefarious purposes but one thing that is to be understood is that it was used...whatever that is used is akin to being a tool and every tool is dual purposed whether you agree or not...so yes AI can be used to create slop, just like with crayon, one can colour abominations of art but wonderful things can be done with tools... bottomline is the individual or the disposition of the individual involved....

Swift110I think that over time that will fall apart like a house of cards though.
except that mx linux is not really a house of cards, it is well built, imo... and word of mouth is not really a reliable method for building experience and finding what fits you because people are different... for example, some users don't mind systemd, so far it doesn't get in the way...most of those who are against systemd is largely due to philosophical reasons and taking preventive meausres at this point... some users don't mind wayland due to using newer systems and certain workflows...others don't do much outside a cli or tui, so they don't and can never see the reasons for wayland... and how is it cheating telling users of a particular distro to increase their distrowatch rank? it is no different from asking viewers of a video to comment, like and subscribe as it signals the algorithm to push that video or channel to a wider audience???

BGMy point was that it might not be Cachy's fault but just some unfortunate combination which they coulnd't foresee in the scripting. Anyway, I would just mount it with fstab, that should be fine. Unless you insist on not having those mounted all the time. I prefer to have that granular control: no
it is high time we realize that workflow is key for every user, not skill me personally, a big fan of GUI but on every install, I go through the process of configuring my install with hibernate support which is what is advocated in the linux ecosystem but I would always say the distro is the issue if there is a lack of hibernate support because I have been on distros, partially clean install - selectively carried over the config and files of certain apps from previous install as I have a separate home partition - like I was saying, I have been on distros where I didn't need to fiddle with grub or any of that and hibernate worked perfectly well...same with swap partitions...
B
RichardWhy the negative emotions?
antix is built to be used the antix way, if you want to use it the conventional way, you encounter insurmountable walls - insurmountable because by the time you scale the wall, you are on a 'different' distro...

Those with old hardware don't have much choice though. It's a pitty that i386 is unsupported by all but a few exotic distributions
