Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium rebound, precious metals sector rallies, silver and platinum spot markets show strong holiday atmosphere [SMM Flash] - Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) SMM reported that precious metals rebounded on September 30 after a series of remarks from US Federal Reserve officials led markets to scale back expectations for an October rate hike. New York Fed President John Williams said that if the economy evolves broadly in line with expectations, another rate hike later this year may be appropriate, but he also said there is “no need to rush.” After those remarks, market expectations for an October hike reportedly fell from around 70% to about 50%. SMM said the weaker US dollar index, continued geopolitical uncertainty, safe-haven flows into gold, and ongoing central bank gold purchases also supported the move. The article says the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, described as the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, increased 3.4% year-on-year in August versus economists’ expectation for 3.7%. It says that shift pushed expectations for an October Fed move down to about 36% to 38%, from roughly 45% and 70% last week. Source: fxempire.com Read the full article

Saskatchewan nuclear reactor plans spark push for work experience from industry Saskatchewan’s nuclear plans are prompting a push to build local industry experience well before reactors are constructed. Saskatchewan Industrial and Mining Suppliers Association executive director Eric Anderson said on The Evan Bray Show that nuclear work leaves “no room for error,” arguing that unlike other industries, “there is no warranty; there is no service department” and projects have to be done “perfect, the first time.” He said the challenge is not simply learning a new welding method, but meeting a different standard for “the quality of welding and the paperwork that goes with it,” with workers needing numerous accreditations. A uranium processing plant left radioactive waste for decades in a Colorado river: since 2009, more than 17 million tons have been removed by train For decades, a large pile of radioactive waste from an old uranium processing plant near Moab, Utah, remained only a short distance from the Colorado River. The site dates back to 1956, when the plant operated during the Cold War uranium boom and processed ore into uranium concentrate, leaving behind vast tailings. After the facility closed, those residues stayed in place next to the river, creating concern that contaminants could reach groundwater and that the river’s proximity increased the environmental risk.
