Misanthropic psychosis

Yesterday I was able to see a clear example of how a small change can drastically reshape a specific environment. I was in a cave where a particular dark-environment-adapted Phagomyzetes ledenicus beetle had been driven out of the cave and its population reduced because the tourist administration of the place installed artificial lights. These lights forced the beetle into hiding in cracks of the cave walls but also led to the growth of mosses and ferns. These plants, with their small roots, slowly degrade the rock and destroy the walls of the cave, changing the geology of the cave, the microclimate, and the whole character of the ecosystem. The green matter will create a hospitable environment for microorganisms, invertebrates, and plants previously unable to colonise the cave. Most importantly, this will be disastrous for the natural ecosystem in the cave; many endemic organisms or those specifically adapted to this life will die out or be forced into competition, with their populations reduced.
