I don't know much about Usenet/Snbz
You connect to the provider, you ask it for the latest uploaded 100 files, you index them into your computer, now you can search the indexed files and download what you want.

But, currently most uploads are encrypted or obscured. so even if you try to download them, you won't be able to open them without knowing what they are.
So here comes the indexers, they upload the files, and keep the file info inside the indexers, then you can download them and get the original files.
So the question, do you really need an indexer? No but sometimes the content you are looking for is not in the public usenet feed, so you will need the indexer at some point later.

For me? I suggest that you try many indexers before deciding which one suites your needs.
