[D] <n​ferrar> Ubuntu is the only "officially" supported distro (which they provide a packaged editor for) but since UE is source code available there is more options with various levels of dentistry. I think there is a build on the AUR for example. I have a Nvidia gpu so SteamOS and Arch are...harder.
[D] <n​ferrar> I'll probably give Catchy a try. I have an Arch drive on my machine and it works fairly well, but I think for something I want to use actively I'd be better off with something less hands on, at least for now.
[D] <t​heartolater> Linux Mint is Ubuntu-based so if you're looking for an easy out-of-the-box option I'd go withthat

[D] <t​heartolater> I tried vanilla ubuntu and didn't love it, but Mint is close enough in style to Windows without being Windows that it works for my purposes as a relative newb to finally escaping MS

[I] <p​hantomas> @nferrat [re: nvidia] what issues are you having on arch with nvidia stuff? and what card do you have?
[D] <n​ferrar> Surprisingly none, as I understand it Arch (and Steam OS) both play much nicer with AMD overall, and while my hyprland environment doesn't have any complaints, I fear what would happen once I got unreal running and it asks for the entire gpu
[I] <p​hantomas> I mean ... recent enough card support nvidia "foss" driver, but even before that I had less issues with nvidia stuff because update came earlier on arch that other distro
[I] <p​hantomas> amd was nicer with linux as a whole tho, which is why wlroot compositor blacklisted nvidia, but that has nothing to do with arch or steamOS
[D] <a​micuchu> eglstream fiasco, vulkan is inefficient because uses ICD... Nvidia usually isn't seen as a good option for linux desktop stack
[D] <n​ferrar> \@phantomas yeah I know it isn't the distro's fault, and I believe I am using the foss driver iirc. I even got Elite Dangerous running without issue so it seems stable enough, but no luck with Unreal yet. Biggest hurdle is finding time honestly.

[I] <p​hantomas> [vulkan is inefficient] that's mostly because they want to sell cuda. nvidia usually implement minimal support for a given version, but all the feature are available *if* you use cuda
