The increased world demand for oil and gas has made it necessary for locating these sources in remote and untouched natural areas. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of damaging these natural areas? An increase in the world’s demand for gas and oil can be the reason why people believe it is important to explore untouched and remote areas for these sources. Although new drilling operations in such regions could make sense economically, I believe the drawbacks of allowing this to happen outweigh its benefits. There is no doubt that fossil fuels changed the course of history by helping people power industries and transform economies. The Industrial Revolution, for example, is an event that was partially possible because of how natural resources were used. Oil and gas still help people power businesses, cars and houses, meaning these sources of energy satisfy people’s needs. Without fossil fuels, the world would not function the same way as it does. Another economic point worth mentioning is how important oil and gas are in terms of jobs. Industries related to or based on fossil fuels employ millions of people worldwide and preventing further exploration of oil and gas could mean the loss of jobs in the short-term future. Some countries in particular depend on this industry more than others, with Kuwait and the UAE being a testament to this. Considering these people have their needs and possibly no other skills to rely on, not developing the fossil fuel industry could have negative economic repercussions. Nevertheless, the economic viewpoint is not comparable to other global consequences of permitting further exploitation of land, especially in remote areas. Many parts of the world are already polluted and spoilt, meaning these last pristine pieces of land should be valued for their original nature. It should also be noted that these remote areas are habitats for rare species of both animals and plants. If they are not protected, we could … Read in full →
