I just switched to Linux mint from windows, and it somehow fixed my headphones Before i had my headphones play sound equally in each headphone, but when i switched to Linux it for some unknown reason started playing like it spatially. Just sharing my experience, would be interested to read any comments that tell how the hell that happened https://redd.it/1vtiu95 @r_linux

I'm experimenting with adding native Windows PE execution to Linux — (Project Tawi) I've been working on a personal project called **Tawi**, and I figured r/linux might be interested in the direction I'm taking it. The long-term idea is to build a Linux-based environment that can run Linux applications normally while also gaining the ability to execute Windows applications through a native compatibility layer. I'm **not trying to replace Wine overnight**, and this is nowhere near production-ready. This is an experimental project where I'm trying to understand how far I can take Windows PE execution directly from the Linux kernel. Right now I've been working on a custom `binfmt` handler for PE32+ executables. The current loader can: * Recognize x86-64 PE32+ executables * Parse the PE headers * Map the PE image into userspace * Load its sections * Find the PE Import Directory * Patch the Import Address Table * Transfer execution to the PE entry point * Provide userspace trampolines for a small number of Win32 APIs And today I got my first actual Windows console output: ~ # chmod +x ./hello2.exe ~ # ./hello2.exe [ 18.701711] tawi: loading ./hello2.exe: entry_rva=0x1000 image_base=0x140000000 size=0x6000 [ 18.703078] tawi: mapped .text at 0x140001000 (0x200 bytes) [ 18.703522] tawi: mapped .rdata at 0x140002000 (0x200 bytes) [ 18.703706] tawi: mapped .pdata at 0x140003000 (0x200 bytes) [ 18.703852] tawi: mapped .xdata at 0x140004000 (0x200 bytes) [ 18.704109] tawi: mapped .idata at 0x140005000 (0x200 bytes) [ 18.704481] tawi: trampoline page at 0x7ffff7ffe000 [ 18.704699] tawi: import DLL: KERNEL32.dll [ 18.705014] tawi: [+] KERNEL32.dll!ExitProcess -> 0x7ffff7ffe000 [ 18.705282] tawi: [+] KERNEL32.dll!GetStdHandle -> 0x7ffff7ffe040 [ 18.705496] tawi: [+] KERNEL32.dll!WriteFile -> 0x7ffff7ffe080 [ 18.705720] tawi: transferring control to entry point 0x140001000

Arch Linux Community now has a Fluxer server For those unaware, Arch Linux Community is the largest "unofficial" Arch server on Dscord and they just did a general announcement about moving to Fluxer. This is a pretty big deal for those trying to push for open source alternatives to proprietary apps. https://fluxer.gg/9sSbE9Ac https://redd.it/1vuk3k8 @r_linux

A tale as old as time I'm fairly new to linux (started 3 months ago) but I'm a really fast learner I felt like I am ready for tiling window managers so I decided to try hyprland with caelestia shell I set up cachy with hyperland (I wanted to try out cachy for the supposed gaming benefits anyways) and spent the following 4 hours in dependacy hell because for some weird reason Caelestia's installer kept trying to delete quickshell 0.3.1.0 since I have noctalia (I didn't have it, I specifically removed it and grep couldn't find any mention of it) After I finally finished troubleshooting and got it working all I was met with was disappointment 1. Caeleatia works worse for me than kde both in terms of ram usage and in terms of my specific workflow 2. I just didn't like it as much as I expected I spent 4 hours just to learn I shouldn't have, I feel like I paid for an expensive restaurant and came out hungry I know it's just a part of life but I was so excited and now I'm just... bored https://redd.it/1vumnlt @r_linux

I'm very positively surprised after moving from Windows to Fedora KDE Been using Fedora KDE for a few days now, after installing it on my new used laptop. I had considered this switch for at least a couple of years, after clinging on to Windows 7 since like 2013. On my other laptops, I have Windows 10, that I have never liked. Just tolerated. The bloat, the ugly layout, the pure dysfunction, the intrusive and coercive design philosophy... My heart was always with Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows 7. You're living in the past man... Hung up on some OS from the 2000's man!" Apart from the initial hassle being confused with live install on USB, the learning curve of installing software, loading repositories and Nvidia drivers, and learning the whole terminal thing (that I've seldomly used with my Sailfish OS phone for like 10 years) there really hasn't been much confusion. Like, that's it. I now have pretty much everything I need. Everything seems to work almost out of the box. I was a expecting a huge uphill struggle for quite a while, before I can get the OS to working condition... But no. It was really that simple. No doubt some unforeseen problems will arise later, after all I'm very lazy at updating any software... Like ever. But so far so good. I now have Reactionary 98 theme installed, and I really feel like home again... Without the dysfunction that comes with clinging on to obsolete Windows 7. I like this theme MORE than I liked the aero theme of Win7. https://redd.it/1vwczdz @r_linux

Manjaro's official website SSL certs have expired yet again. This seems to be a running theme for the Manjaro Linux community. The SSL certs will always expire after a set year and there's a massive controversy over it. Why does this keep happening specifically to Manjaro and what steps do you think they can possibly do to keep this from happening? https://redd.it/1vwpf8f @r_linux

A golden era of Linux for average users We truly have reached a golden era for using Linux. I have recently installed Ubuntu on my old laptop and literally every single problem i've had i was able to fix within 5 minutes of encountering it using Gemini. I have over 100 games on Steam and i am able to play every single one of them with Proton. Have we reached Peak? https://redd.it/1vx063w @r_linux
