We know God by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
This new hitherto unknown sense was given to us by God so we would know His love and His goodness.
It is like an extra eye or ear to see things we have never seen or hear what we have never heard previously.
It is as if we have been given wings and given the whole universe to fly around.
The Holy Spirit gives wings to our souls.

The Dormition Fast
August 1/14–August 14/27
The Dormition fast was established as preceding the great feasts of the Transfiguration of the Lord and of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
The Dormition fast comes down to us from the early days of Christianity.
We find a clear reference to the Dormition fast in a conversation of Leo the Great from around the year 450 A.D.
St. Symeon of Thessalonica writes that, “The fast in August [Dormition fast] was established in honor of the Mother of God the Word; Who, foreknowing Her repose, ascetically labored and fasted for us as always, although She was holy and immaculate, and had no need for fasting.
Thus, She especially prayed for us in preparation for being transported from this life to the future life, when Her blessed soul would be united through the Divine spirit with Her Son.
Therefore, we also should fast and praise Her, emulating Her life, urging Her thereby to pray for us.
On Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays of the Dormition fast, the Church rubrics prescribe xerophagy, that is, the strictest fast of uncooked food (without oil); on Tuesdays and Thursdays, “with cooked food, but with no oil”; on Saturdays and Sundays wine and oil are allowed.
Until the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, when grapes and apples are blessed in the churches, the Church requires that we abstain from these fruits.
On the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Church rubrics allow fish. After that day, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, the fruits of the new harvest would always be included in the meals.
The spiritual fast is closely united with the bodily, just as our soul is united with the body, penetrates it, enlivens it, and makes one united whole with it, as the soul and body make one living human being. Therefore, in fasting bodily we must at the same time fast spiritually:
“Brothers, in fasting bodily let us also fast spiritually, severing all union with unrighteousness,” the Holy Church enjoins

Procession of Honorable Wood of the Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord
Celebration of the All-Merciful Savior Christ God and His Mother the Most Holy Theotokos, Mary
August 1/August 14
Greek Horologion of 1897: “Because of the illnesses which occur during the month of August, it was customary at Constantinople to carry the Precious Wood of the Cross in procession throughout the city for its sanctification, and to deliver it from sickness.”
On the eve (July 31), the Cross was removed from the imperial treasury and placed it upon the Holy Table of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia which is dedicated to Christ, the Wisdom of God.
From August 1 until the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, there was a procession throughout the entire the city, and then the Cross was placed where all the people could venerate it.
In the Russian Church this Feast is combined with the remembrance of the Baptism of Russia on August 1, 988.
The feast of the All-Merciful Savior, Christ our God, and His Mother the Most Holy Theotokos, Mary, instituted in 1158 in Russia under Metropolitan Constantine of Kiev, and in Greece, under Patriarch Luke of Constantinople.
The reason for instituting this feast in Russia was the victory of the Russian forces led by Prince Andrei Bogoliubsky over the Volga Bulgars on August 1, and in Greece, the victory on the same day of Emperor Manuel over the Moslem Arabs, or Saracens.
Every time the pious Russian prince Andrei Bogloliubsky campaigned against the enemy he took with him an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and the Honorable Cross of the Lord.
Before setting out on a bloody battle he would bring out the icon of the Mother of God with the Honorable Cross to his soldiers, and together with them he would fall to the ground and pray to the Mother of God with tears the following prayer:
O Sovereign Lady, who gave birth to Christ our God! All who hope in Thee shall not perish; and I, Thy slave, have in Thee from God a wall and

The Reverend Father Serafim
Seraphim Alexeivich Slobodskoy (September 11, 1912, Chernstovka, Penzen oblast - November 5, 1971, USA) a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in the United States who is noted for preparation of catechetical works for the education of Orthodox youth, author of the textbook "The Law of God".
Orthodox public worship has as its purpose the edification of the faithful by setting forth the true doctrines of Christ through readings and chanting, and to dispose them towards prayer and repentance. The services represent the most important events from sacred history accomplished for our salvation both before the birth of Christ and after. They inspire the faithful to give thanks to God for all the benefits received from Him, they intensify the supplications for further mercies upon us from Him, and help us to acquire peace in our souls.
The most important aspect is that through divine services the Orthodox Christian enters into a mystical union with God through the Mysteries celebrated in divine worship, especially the Mystery of Holy Communion, and thus receives from God the powers of Divine Grace with which to live a righteous life.

This great Russian saint left to Orthodox Christians a compass by which we can check our direction as we traverse the complex path of spiritual life, to avoid the dark forests and pitfalls of spiritual delusion and pride.
The reason that fasting has an effect on the spirits of evil rests in its powerful effect on our own spirit.
A body subdued by fasting brings the human spirit freedom, strength, sobriety, purity, and keen discernment.

There are only two paths for overcoming the feeling of servile dependence on the opinions of others: either pride or humility.
Humility can take the form of indifference both to slander and to praise from people—of standing only before the judgment of God and one’s own conscience.
This is spoken of in the story of a monk who wished to learn how one should respond to praise and reproach. His spiritual father ordered him to go to the cemetery and revile the dead.
He did so, and when he returned, the elder asked how the departed had behaved.
“They did nothing,” replied the monk. “They kept silence.”
“Now go and praise them,” the elder commanded.
And when the disciple reported that the cemetery had remained just as silent as before, the elder said:
“Act like the dead.
Human judgment no longer touches them, because they now stand before the eyes of God.”

Saint Luke, Bishop of Simferopol and Crimea
Valentin Felixovich Voyno-Yasenetsky
(14 April 1877, Kerch, the Soviet Union–11 June 1961, Simferopol) – was a Russian surgeon, spiritual writer, a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, and archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea from May 1946 until his death.
He was a laureate of the Stalin Prize in medicine in 1946.
When a certain scribe asked the Lord Jesus Christ which commandment was greatest in the Law, He answered Him: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God will all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matthew 22:37-39).
Thus, the commandment of wholehearted love for God and our neighbors comprises the essence of the whole Law of Christ.
All of you, my brothers and sisters, want to be close to our Savior Jesus Christ and are aware of the immense importance of the law of love and mutual forgiveness of one another.
In the Epistle to the Galatians we read the holy words of the Apostle Paul: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
You all know how great and heavy the burdens and hardships of very many of our neighbors are.
Let us not only forgive people their trespasses against us, but also to bear patiently the infirmities of the weak – not trying to please ourselves, nor trying to get rid of them.
Let us also help, as much as we can, our neighbors in the bearing of the often heaven burden of their lives – and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

Seraphim (Chichagov) of Leningrad
Leonid Mikhailovich Chichagov
(9 June1856 – 11 December 1937). The holy, glorious, right-victorious hieromartyr Seraphim of Leningrad and Gdov was the Metropolitan of the Diocese of Leningrad and Gdov in the Church of Russia between 1928 and 1933. Influenced by Fr. John of Kronstadt, he became a monk after serving in the Russian army, executed by firing squad, and was canonized by the Church in 1997 as a New Martyr.
What is faith? The holy Apostle Paul writes: Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1); that is, the realization of what our eyes don’t see, our hands don’t touch, but our hearts and minds undoubtedly affirm that it must be so, and not otherwise.
We don’t see God, but we know that He’s our Creator, our Heavenly Father, and we feel His love, His mercy, His power, and His omnipresence.
We don’t see our Savior Jesus Christ, but we know that He was willingly crucified for mankind on the Cross, ascended into Heaven, and at the same time, remains in unapproachable glory on the right hand of the Father and in His Christian Church, and that He told His disciples: Yet a little while, and the world seeth Me no more; but ye see Me: because I live, ye shall live also (Jn. 14:19).

The Feast Of Transfiguration
August 6/August 19
Transfiguration of Christ is one of the central events recorded in the gospels. Immediately after the Lord was recognized by his apostles as “the Christ [Messiah], the Son of the Living God,” he told them that “he must go up to Jerusalem and suffer many things ... and be killed and on the third day be raised” (Mt 16).
The announcement of Christ’s approaching passion and death was met with indignation by the disciples. And then, after rebuking them, the Lord took Peter, James, and John “up to a high mountain”—by traditionMount Tabor—and was “transfigured before them.
In the Transfiguration, the apostles see the glory of the Kingdom of God present in majesty in the person of ChriSt They see that in him, indeed, all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,” that “in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily” (Col 1:19, 2:9). They see this before the crucifixion so that in the resurrection they might know who it is who has suffered for them, and what it is that this one, who is God, has prepared for those who love him.
This is what the Church celebrates in the feast of the Transfiguration.
Moses and Elijah, according to the liturgical verses, are not only the greatest figures of the Old Testament who now come to worship the Son of God in glory, they also are not merely two of the holy men to whom God has revealed himself in the prefigurative theophanies of the Old Covenant of Israel.
These two figures actually stand for the Old Testament itself: Moses for the Lawand Elijah for the Prophets. And Christ is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (Mt 5:17).
They also stand for the living and dead, for Moses died and his burial place is known, while Elijah was taken alive into heaven in order to appear again to announce the time of God’s salvation in Christ the Messiah.
Thus, in appearing with Jesus on the mount of Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah show that the Messiah Saviour is here, and that he is

Saint Metrophanes of Voronezh
Commemoration
August 7/ August 20
Saint Metrophanes, Bishop of Voronezh, in the world Michael, was born November 8, 1623.
We know from Saint Metrophanes’ will that he “was born of pious parents and was raised by them in the incorrupt piety of the Eastern Church, in the Orthodox Faith.”
Until he was forty, the saint lived in the world. He was married, had a son John, and served as a parish priest.
After his wife died, Father Michael received monastic tonsure with the name Metrophanes in the Zolotnikovskaya Dormition Monastery in 1663.
At the Moscow Council of 1681-1682 among the number of measures taken for the struggle against the old ritualist schism, and with the goal of improving Christian enlightenment among the Orthodox populace, it was resolved to increase the number of dioceses, and to open up new cathedrals at Voronezh, Tambov, Kholmogor and Great Ustiug.
Saint Metrophanes was summoned to the capital and on April 2, 1682 was consecrated Bishop of Voronezh by Patriarch Joachim and sixteen archpastors.
The first Bishop of Voronezh eagerly concerned himself with the needs of his flock.
He consoled both the poor and the wealthy, was a defender of widows and orphans, and an advocate of the wronged. His home served as a hostel for strangers and a hospice for the sick. The saint prayed not only for the living, but also for dead Christians, and particularly for soldiers fallen for the Fatherland, inscribing their names in the cathedral’s memorial list. Remembering them at Proskomedia [priest’s preparation of the gifts before Liturgy], Saint Metrophanes said: “If this is a righteous soul, then there is a greater portion of worthiness. If he is a sinner, however, then there is a connection with God’s mercy."
Saint Metrophanes, an intensely patriotic man, by his own moral authority, kind-heartedness and prayers, contributed to the reforms of Peter I, the necessity and purpose of which he well understood. With th

He was a humble ascetic and man of prayer, who patiently and courageously bore the cross of physical illnesses throughout his life.
He contributed in every way to the work of eldership in the skete, which he led for 14 years.
Your spirit should not grow weary, but should become warm from spiritual reading, from it should come thoughts about eternity, and from prayer, even though it may be brief.

For without Divine help we are powerless; we cannot even deal with pesky flies, must less invisible enemies.

(8 September 1919, Ryazan region - 20 February 2017, Peredelkino, Moscow).
Russian Orthodox Christian monk, elder and Archimandrite, who was confessor to Patriarch Alexy II. He was also confessor to the previous patriarchs Alexy I and Pimen.
It must be noted that the most glorious Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ took place at a time when His soul was preoccupied with the thought of His coming labor on the Cross and death. Obviously, the thought of the Cross reigned in the God-man’s thoughts before this great event and during His Transfiguration itself on Mt. Tabor, and had a considerably important influence over him. Thus, the thought of the Cross contributed to the Transfiguration.
As from a dark cloud bright lightening flashes forth, so also from the Lord’s thought of the Cross, from His firm resolve to take it upon His shoulders naturally flashed forth His Transfiguration.
Our own transfiguration is just as closely connected with our own cross as Christ’s Transfiguration was with His Cross.
Only through constant remembrance of His cross and constantly carrying it without complaint does our grace-filled transfiguration take place here, and our future glorious transfiguration is prepared for us in the heavens.

Fasting is absolutely indispensable for man.
From the external aspect, it is a struggle of filial obedience to God, Who has given us the rules of fasting through His Holy Spirit.
From the inner aspect, fasting is a struggle of restraint and self-limitation.
In this lies the great value and sense of fasting, since a strict observance of fasts tempers onés will and perfects the character of one who is firm in his religious convictions and actions.
Let us not forget that Christ Himself fasted, and foretold that His apostles would also fast.
For a Christian, fasting is a time of restraint and self-education in all respects, and a real Christian fast gives believers a great moral satisfaction.
