Explicit means stated directly and clearly, in the actual words. Nothing is left to guess.💧
Implicit means suggested or hinted, but not stated. You have to infer it. (You wrote “inexplicit,” which is rare and means the same thing. “Implicit” is the word the SAT uses.)⭐
Example:🤓
Explicit: “I’m angry that you were late.”🤬
Implicit: She checked her watch, sighed, and said nothing when he walked in. (The anger is implied, never stated.)😠
How this shows up on the SAT❓
“The author explicitly states...” → find the exact words in the text. If you can’t point to a line, it’s wrong.
“The passage implies...” → the answer isn’t written, but it must follow logically from what is written. Stay close to the text and avoid extreme or outside-knowledge answers.
Memory trick: explicit sounds like explain, as in clearly spelled out. Implicit sounds like imply, as in hinted.
