Whatever happened to Singapore horror? From the ‘50s to ‘90s, this was one of our country’s most beloved literary genres, with beloved tales of pontianaks and hungry ghosts flying off the shelves. But in recent years, it’s fallen out of the spotlight, with fewer authors specialising in this field, even as Singaporean fantasy and sci-fi makes waves abroad. Our Halloween panel brings together two horror writers—YA novelist Xie Shi Min and comics creator Sean Lam—to revel in the spookiness of the season, and to discuss timely questions with the help of moderator Brandon David Servos. What defines the Singaporean horror writing scene now, and how can it grow in the future? This marks the first of a series of SFF events by the new literary collective Speculative Fiction Singapore. // SG HORROR NOW! // 📅 15 October 2026 🕖 6:30pm 📍Book Bar Register at https://luma.com/kbr9ojdy

Friends of literature are invited to a book talk on my translated novel 'Register Me as Kulbhushan,' by award-winning Hindi author Alka Saraogi, at The Book Bar on October 16th from 7.00-9.00pm! I will be speaking with poet, translator, and critic Daryl Lim Wei Jie. We will discuss the historical fiction's portrayal of the Partition of eastern India in Bengal, as well as the recurring tides of violence that swept our main hero into adopting a host of new identities in a strange new land as a refugee, far from his beloved home. The conversation will also focus on the craft of literary translation and some of the creative considerations that go into transforming a story from a different history, culture, and language into an enjoyable text for a new audience. Kulbhushan's special power is the magical "Button of Forgetting," which enables him to forget whatever he wants on demand. We hope, however, that you *don't forget* to save the date and join us for what is bound to be a riveting, all-round discussion.
