We're releasing the first batch of Dataset.ET open speech data for Amharic.
22.7 hours. 7,405 recordings. 320 speakers. Free, CC BY 4.0, on Hugging Face.
Amharic has close to no open speech data. That's the gap we're trying to close, and this is the first step rather than the finished thing.
Some honesty about what this is: it's a first batch. The audio isn't preprocessed yet. We're not going to tell you it's the best quality out there. We don't think it is. What we want is for people to actually use it and tell us where it falls short.
The next release will be different: properly preprocessed audio, a real data pipeline with testing and validation built in. This exists because 320 people in Ethiopia gave their voices to it, and because contributors reviewed each other's recordings. Thank you to all of them.
If you're working on Ethiopian languages, low-resource ASR, or you just want to talk about the data, DM us. We'd genuinely like to hear from you.

Have you ever wondered why some things feel beautiful partly because they don't last?
A sunset is beautiful because it disappears.
Flowers are beautiful partly because they bloom and die.
Even a moment with someone can feel precious because you know you can't keep it forever.
There's actually an old philosophical idea called mono no aware, the beauty and sadness that comes from knowing things are temporary.
And that made me think about the idea of an eternal afterlife.
If heaven is supposed to be eternal, and you're there forever, experiencing happiness forever...
doesn't that create a strange contradiction?
If something never ends, can it still have the same kind of meaning that comes from knowing it will end?
Maybe an eternal existence would solve the problem of death...
but would it also remove one of the things that makes life beautiful in the first place?
I don't know if that's a contradiction that proves anything.
But I think it's a really interesting question.
I was thinking of the universe origin reading the big bang theory and something bugged me. If the big bang was really the start of everything then why did it start with such low entropy. Entropy is supposed to always go up, that is the second law, so if you go back in time the universe should have been even less ordered the further back you go, but instead it is the opposite, it starts almost perfectly ordered. That never made sense to me and nobody seems to actually know why.
That got me thinking about duality, how nature is always built out of opposite pairs that balance each other out. Positive and negative charge, north and south pole, spin up and spin down. None of these things exist alone, they always come as a pair that cancels out or balances. So I started wondering if the universe itself works the same way, if maybe it also has an opposite partner somewhere.
Then I thought about reincarnation, like the Hindu idea of life and death being a cycle instead of a straight line that just ends. Life is not really a dead end, death leads back into life again. I thought maybe the universe works the same way instead of just being one straight line from a low entropy start to a high entropy heat death and then nothing.
So I combined all three of these into one idea. Maybe our universe has a twin universe that is its opposite, like the duality in charge or spin. Our entropy goes up while the other one's entropy goes down, so together they balance like a positive and negative pair. The two universes are cut off from each other in the dimensions we can see but somehow linked through a higher dimension where entropy can pass between them, kind of like heat moving from hot to cold until it settles.
That would make the whole thing act like a cycle, similar to the reincarnation idea. Whatever one universe loses the other one gains, so entropy never really hits a final dead end, it just keeps moving back and forth between the two sides forever. And it would also finally ex
