NATO said they wouldn’t expand eastward after the fall of the Soviet Union. Plenty of EU leaders talked about bringing Ukraine into NATO. Hell, Putin even tried to join NATO during Obama’s presidency and was rebuffed. They are just being targeted for destruction by the west and have decided to make a stand.
