Hebrew Focus Follow the thread back to the first morning of creation. There the days of Genesis 1 were “made” (asah) by God. In Psalm 118:24 the same word asah is used for the day that has been “made” by God: zeh ha-yom asah YHWH, “this is the day the LORD has made.” So today, this very day you are completing, did not come as a leftover of time from God’s hands. Today came off the very workbench of God the Creator of the universe, the same workbench where the first morning of creation was made. Today was “made” by the very same hand that “made” the light of the world. This psalm does something amazing with a very small word. It takes the very word that is used to open up the Bible, yom, the word for day in Genesis, and it focuses that word on a single day in the life of the psalmist, this day! Not someday, not some other day, not even the day that you would have liked to have been. This day! Then we come to the response to this declaration of a special day: nagilah v’nismecha vo, let us rejoice and be glad in it. The little word vo is added to the end of the verb to indicate that we are to rejoice in this very day, with all its struggles and hardships. We are not to be glad about how the day went; rather we are to rejoice in the fact that we are in this day, that we are living this day. And we are able to rejoice in this day because the God of Genesis, the God of the cosmos, made this day on purpose, with His own two hands

The Pattern Psalm 118:24. Zeh ha-yom. This verse comes right after the well-known line, “the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” So this “day” is celebrated as a day of deliverance, and the gladness here is not something worked up by the celebrant. It is the natural reaction of someone who has been saved. Genesis 1, the verb asah. The same hand that made the lights and the creatures and the man and the woman made this day of yours. Matthew 21:42. Jesus takes the cornerstone line straight out of this psalm and lays it on himself: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” The church that sang Psalm 118 came to hear “this is the day the LORD has made” as resurrection morning, the day every other yom had been walking toward. This day is being sung on an ordinary way and there is nothing ordinary about what it means for you

How to Handle Burdens   We’re not to retreat when pressures build and weigh us down; rather, the Lord instructs us to release them to Him.   July 26, 2026   Psalms 55:1-23   In today’s reading, David is weighed down by external pressures and internal struggles. Burdens come in many forms and often feel very heavy. Every one of us can identify with David’s desire to “fly away and be at rest” (v. 6).   Some of the loads we carry are not part of God’s plan for us. At times, we lug around guilt that lingers even after confession of sin. Or we carry worry about the future (Matthew 6:34).   Other burdens, however, are simply part of living faithfully in a broken world. We have genuine responsibilities—caring for family, navigating work demands, maintaining relationships—that can feel heavy. And we face relational difficulties that arise not because God orchestrates them but because we are imperfect, living among imperfect people. When such challenges persist without resolution, they can leave us feeling overwhelmed.   But every circumstance in life passes through God’s hands before reaching us. He never intends for any of His children to carry a burden without His help. He says to give it to Him (Ps. 55:22) and promises to sustain us.   Casting your cares upon God means releasing them fully into His control (1 Peter 5:7).
