 HP and Dell disable HEVC support built into their laptops’ CPUs Summary   Device manufacturers like Dell and HP are blocking hardware support for the HEVC/H265 codec in some models, even if the hardware (CPU/iGPU) supports it.   Quotes Quote While HP’s and Dell’s reps didn’t explain the companies’ motives, it’s possible that the OEMs are looking to minimize costs, since OEMs may pay some or all of the licensing fees associated with HEVC hardware decoding and encoding support, as well as some or all of the royalties per the number of devices that they sell with HEVC hardware decoding and encoding support.   My thoughts   This seems very anti-consumer and will lead to frustration for users trying to figure out why their content won't work. Since the OEMs won't disclose why they are doing this, it stands to reason the only correlation is due to the price per device rising from $0.20 to $0.24, which means that they could be on the hook for a few extra million per device model in royalties. This is a good time to point out that alternative open-source codecs exist like AV1 or VP9.   Digging into this it appears that they have disabled the features in ACPI tables, meaning that Windows won't know the hardware supports HEVC and therefore cannot display the content. You can get around this by purchasing the $0.99 codec from the Microsoft Store, or by using a 3rd party media player like VLC. However, this will still only allow software decoding/encoding. You can also install Linux and get full hardware acceleration back since it doesn't use the specific ACPI tables they are using.  Crucial no more! Micron to exit consumer business to focus on supplying AI data center. Summary Micron are quitting the consumer market to focus on AI solutions. No more Crucial!   Quotes Quote Micron announced today that it will exit its Crucial consumer business, bringing an end to retail sales of Crucial-branded SSDs and memory modules at major stores and online retailers. The company says it will continue shipping Crucial products through fiscal Q2 2026 (ending February 2026), after which the brand will no longer operate in the consumer channel. Warranty coverage and support will remain in place.   My thoughts Consumers will lose one of the major sources of SSDs and RAM, thanks to AI growth. Presumably Micron don't feel the effort required to serve consumer uss cases are worth it for them if they can concentrate only on enterprise/data center market, driven by AI growth. Micron own their own fabs so this will reduce the supply options to consumer once they ship through existing planned stock early next year. There are always terms for how a website or service can be used, I'd be surprised if AT&T and Verizon did not already have terms that disallow automated tools to scrape personal account info, and if they do, the account owner cannot override those web terms by saying it's okay. The T-Mobile tool has been updated for AT&T customers to now ask for a .PDF of the last bill, which seems a lot safer to me, that doesn't have any terms and conditions, the customer can share

 SmartTube infected with botnet malware Summary The popular YouTube Android app alternative "SmartTube" for Android TVs and Android Streaming devices (like NVidia shield, Google TV Streamer, Amazon FireTV, etc.) has been confirmed to be infected with botnet malware. Users are advised to at the very least revoke any access given to SmartTube via their Google Account settings, remove the app if still installed and make sure to re-install only a version that has been confirmed to be clean.  Google AI Search gets hijacked by malicious actors using URL-manipulation Google Geminis AI search summary can be hijacked by malicious actors and used to tell lies. In the last couple of months a news story about Flügger (a paint company) and their partners circumventing the sanctions against imports to Russia has been in the danish news. Today the national broadcaster DR has revealed how Google Gemini's AI search summary has been hijacked by malicious actors to tell a story in Google search where Quote “Flügger has been subjected to malicious accusations and misunderstandings, primarily concerning a claim that the company’s paint had been shipped to Russia despite sanctions. However, a new investigation has revealed that the accusations were based on incorrect data and misunderstandings in trade documents, and that the paint was never shipped to Russia.” (Translated) None of which is based on true documentations.    Gemini is basing the summary on a mix of trusted news sources and, the interesting part, other trusted sources that are completely irrelevant to the search. In these examples a University from Hungary, a Kyrgyz news site and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority: KCAA. Gemini links to these other trusted sites, that doesn’t mention the danish news story on the page, but only a headline incorporated in the URL. Quote “The only trace of the Flügger news story is the article URL, to which a so-called query string has been added. This is typically the last part of the URL and can be used to increase the amount of information that, for example, Google’s crawler reads as it moves around the web.” (Translated)   Gemini then make up the rest of the news story from the URL-headline, without any sources supporting that.  University of Utah team discovers rare computer relic (possibly the original UNIX operating system source code from 1973) Summary University of Utah team discovers rare computer relic, an old data tape that might contain the original UNIX Operating system source code from 1973 that was sent out to at most around 20 people from BellLabs. If true, this is the code that lead to the start of Linux and macOS.   The tape is being taken to Computer History Museum to see if they have a machine that can read it. ence of Firefox, but given Mozilla's history with NOT listening to the community, only bad scenarios pop up to mind. I can't be expected to keep up with what features are added that I must disable every update to keep Firefox's resources usage to a minimum (Firefox occasionally pushes multiple updates a week, which sounds like wild goose chase). Sure, there's no such thing as a "perfect browser" even within the forks, but it takes a new kind of deafness to not only ignore a sizeable chunk of its users and developers, but also push features that hinders one of the main selling points of Firefox - "being the gold standard for privacy" - whilst chasing the "AI! AI! AI!" gold mine that is the current "bubble". .    While the usefulness of chatbots and AI models can't go understated, it's been shown time and time again that trusting AI can be a huge privacy issue, such as the time Perplexity.ai discovered Google indexed shared ChatGPT conversations, or when Microsoft uploaded Copilot gaming screenshots, enabled by default, and so on. No matter what it is, if it has AI in it, it'll be exploited one way or another and will become a potential vector of attack for nefarious users.    I'll be removing all of my passwords on the browser, but for now I'll continue to use Firefox until the time AI and other features I'm not interested are forced to be turned on. I've used the browser since the days of Windows XP, and all that I'd like to say has already been echoed by others on the Mozilla support forums and the subreddit.  Nvidia is hinting it will cut consumer RTX supply in 2026 by up to 40% Summary Multiple tech news sites are sharing that Chinese manufacturers have gotten word of impending production cuts from Nvidia. It sounds like this is due to the ongoing DRAM supply constraints.    OC3D notes that benchlife.info, a Chinese site, expects that this will not be an across the board production cut, but rather a severe cut to specific models like the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and RTX 5070 Ti.   Quotes Quote These cuts are reportedly due to shortages of memory, not just GDDR7, but all memory types. Quote Note that there is no mention of non-GeForce RTX PRO series GPUs. If GDDR7 memory supply is indeed limited, Nvidia may be allocating its limited memory stocks to its more profitable RTX PRO GPU lineup, sacrificing its GeForce lineup. My thoughts This is going to have a massive effect, obviously, to PC gaming.   Unfortunately, I suspect that this will mean DIY builds will become even more difficult as a system integrators and all-in-one builders will likely get first dibs.   If this is a long-term trend, expect the consoleification of PC gaming.  Google's AI Summary accuses Ashley MacIsaac of being a Sex Offender Summary Google's AI summary said that he was a sex offender after combining his information with someone else with the same/similar name from another province. The First Nations reserve that was going to have the concert cancelled based on this information, but has since apologized after learning it was false.   Quotes Quote MacIsaac said the summary falsely asserted he had been convicted of a series of offences including sexual assault, internet luring, assaulting a woman and attempting to assault a minor. As well, he said the Google entry accused him of being listed on the national sex offender registry, which is also untrue. "I could have been at a border and put in jail," he said. "So something has to be figured out as far as what the AI companies are responsible for ... and what they can prevent."   My thoughts In this case, it cost him a show. Different person, different town, different time when the "news" broke, this could be a really scary situation.  This isn't even some random person who happens to perform, he's well known in Canada and especially in the Maritimes.    When an AI makes a mistake, who is liable? What safeguards are in place, or should be in place, to prevent AI summaries from including erroneous information? Theres no simple answer, we can all say just dump the AI Summary but most of us use it, even Luke and Linus on WANShow while complaining about it and how inaccurate it can be still often reference it several times a show..
