Microsoft rolls out hardware-accelerated BitLocker in Windows 11 Summary Microsoft is rolling out hardware-accelerated Bitlocker in Windows 11. They say it will improve performance impact due to real-time encrypt/decrypt that feels more pronounced on NVMe drives. As far as I can tell, no existing CPU/platform currently supports it though. So you'll likely have to upgrade to take advantage. They say the upcoming Intel vPro devices featuring Core Ultra Series 3 (formally codenamed Panther Lake) processors will provide initial support for these capabilities with support for other vendors and platforms planned.   A bar chart comparing an average number of cycles per IO between hardware-accelerated BitLocker and software BitLocker as opposed to without BitLocker encryption A diagram comparing a software BitLocker to hardware accelerated BitLocker. Quotes Quote  We know that users desire both security and great performance. Historically, we have strived to keep BitLocker performance overhead within single digit percentage points. However, with the rapid rise in popularity and advancement of Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) drive technology, these drives now achieve much higher Input/Output (I/O) operation speeds. As a result, corresponding BitLocker cryptographic operations can require a higher proportion of CPU (Central Processing Unit) cycles. This makes the performance impact of BitLocker more pronounced, especially on high-throughput and I/O intensive workloads like gaming or video editing. Balancing robust security with minimal performance impact is more challenging than ever. The need to protect sensitive data remains critical, but users also expect their devices to operate at peak efficiency. As a result, the industry has needed to innovate new solutions that ensure both security and speed are maintained even as hardware capabilities advance. To achieve this, we announced hardware-accelerated

Rainbow Six Siege Servers Hacked: ~2B R6 Credits (≈$13.33M value) for all players, mass bans, data breaches, and Ubisoft shuts servers in a panic. Summary On Saturday, December 27, 2025, Rainbow Six Siege players suffered a major cyber attack where many accounts were suddenly credited with over 2 billion R6 Credits and Renown and, in many cases, items that appear to include developer-only cosmetics. At the same time, players were randomly banned for offenses they did not commit with messages accusing them of harassment, cheating, ToS breach, DDoSing, etc. all simultaneously (however restarting the client would result in an unban within minutes of the restart). Players were also unknowingly having their data stolen and exposed to malicious actors during this time. The in-game notification ban ticker (which was removed in a previous update) was re-added and displayed inappropriate messages or song lyrics. Ubisoft acknowledged an incident affecting Siege, then intentionally shut down Siege and the Marketplace while they work on remediation, and stated a rollback of transactions since 11:00 AM UTC is underway while also saying players won’t be banned for spending credits received.   Quotes Quote “Update: Siege and the Marketplace have been intentionally shut down while the team focuses on resolving the issue.” “Based on Ubisoft's pricing, 15,000 R6 Credits cost $99.99, placing the value of 2 billion credits at roughly $13.33 million worth of in-game currency distributed for free.” “ Nobody will be banned for spending credits received. A rollback of all transactions that occurred since 11 AM (UTC time) is underway.”   Additional incident details Developer-only or otherwise unobtainable items appeared on accounts, including the “dev weapon skin.”  The in-game ban ticker/notification feed displayed song-lyric style messages and other inappropriate messages Ubisoft stated the ban ticker
encrypted passwords, full credit card numbers and expiration dates (but no CCV's), full names, billing addresses & zip codes, session tokens, transaction history, and 2FA backup codes were posted in a Discord server dedicated to cheating by the group claiming to be responsible for the hack.  Unknown Extent of Incident: Some have speculated that the hackers could also have exploited the kernel-level anti-cheat (BattlEye) which Rainbow Six Siege users in order to infect all players with malware. This claim remains unverified. My thoughts This is still a developing story, and at the time of writing we do not know the full scope of what was accessed or altered on Ubisoft’s side. What is clear, though, is that the attackers were able to tamper with multiple “trust” systems at once: account entitlements (R6 Credits/Renown and cosmetics), moderation state (ban flags), and player-facing messaging (the reintroduced ban ticker). When a live-service title’s backend can be manipulated at that level, it stops being a “game issue” and becomes a platform security issue, because the same services that deliver cosmetics also enforce integrity and protect purchases.   The 2B R6 Credits figure is especially useful as a scale indicator. Even if the currency cannot be converted into real money, granting the equivalent of roughly $13.33 million in premium currency per account is enough to destabilize the in-game economy and the Marketplace immediately. At that point, a rollback is essentially the only practical containment option—trying to selectively unwind purchases and trades at player scale is slow, error-prone, and invites more disputes. Unfortunately, rollbacks also create collateral damage: legitimate Marketplace transactions, time-limited purchases, and other progression made during the affected window can be lost, and players end up bearing the cost in time and uncertainty.   The other major concern is the leak of sensitive account data

German hacker group Chaos Computer Club urges monthly Digital Independence Day Summary The Chaos Computer Club and partner organizations are calling for a monthly Digital Independence Day to encourage people to reconsider their reliance on dominant tech platforms and gradually move toward privacy-respecting, democratic alternatives such as independent email, messaging, and browsers. The goal is to break platform dependency through collective user action and greater digital self-determination. On the accompanying website di.day the CCC, an organization of White Hats founded in the 1980s, provides information and guides for consumers on alternatives to certain applications like Twitter, Gmail, Chrome etc. and how to switch to them.   Quotes Quote "Europe is in the stranglehold of Big Tech. These platforms disregard our laws, erode our democracy, and thus our freedom," CCC wrote on its blog.   My thoughts   A (monthly) Digital Independence Day is not just a pleasant idea, it is overdue. We have gradually accepted a digital world where a small group of corporations controls how we communicate, how we organize, how news spreads etc. It is sold to us as convenience, while in reality, it is dependence. What I like about this idea is that it does not romanticize technology or try to turn people into luddites. Instead it provides alternatives. Big Tech dominance did not arise because these platforms were ethically superior, but they were designed to be easy to join, capture attention, and relentlessly expand.  A recurring Digital Independence Day matters because habit changes require repetition.A monthly reminder to review the tools we use and perhaps replace some of them or learn about a better option could have some real potential. It helps transform passive consumers into conscious customers. If we think about the impact of technology on democratic processes, it would help to educate digital citizens.. Swi

Reports suggest physical GPU defects affecting RX 6800 and RX 6900 cards   Numerous reports from China suggest that AMD’s Navi 21 GPU, used in Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6900 graphics cards, may suffer from a physical defect that can lead to sudden failure. While similar claims have circulated in the past, a Chinese board partner has now shared images and statements pointing to recurring damage to the GPU die itself.   Quotes Quote This is the RMA manager from Xifeng. I’m aware that there has been a lot of skepticism online regarding our after-sales service, and it’s true that there have been cases where we did not handle things well. However, I want to make it clear that there has not been a single case where we refused warranty coverage due to a defective GPU core. In this regard, we have done our best to uphold the bottom line of GPU after-sales support. Even with Navi 21 GPUs (the well-known RX 6800/6900 XT models that are prone to core bulging), despite many refusal cases from other brands, we replaced the GPU cores for users regardless of whether the issue was bulging or a short circuit. These defective cores are still stored in our warehouse. In fact, we receive GPUs with faulty cores for after-sales service on a daily basis. Going forward, we plan to collaborate with another content creator to take some of these defective cores and turn them into commemorative items for a giveaway. Thank you all for your support.   Just another reason why some repair shops are reluctant to take damaged Radeon boards orders. Undervolt yours now anyway, and pray to dodge the bullet.   Sources: https://wccftech.com/zephyr-confirms-numerous-reports-of-high-end-rx-6000-gpu-dies/

First Impressions of China’s Glenfly Arise 1020 GPU Aren’t Great     Summary  Go back to bed, Glenfly, as performance looks terribly weak. In 3DMark 11, the Chinese graphics card, which we think uses mid-2000s era S3/Via GPU technology, scored as follows: Entry – E1980, Performance - P1081, and Extreme X275. What can we find for comparable reference points in the history of AMD / ATI / Nvidia graphics cards? Quotes Quote at some Bilibili sourced tests, we saw evidence that the Glenfly Arise 1020 was about 60X slower than the relatively modern GeForce GTX 1060 (Geekbench OpenCL). It may not be quite that bad, but it's certainly not going to keep up with the best graphics cards.   My thoughts  well,my thoughts since Glenfly only gave this card 2GB DDR4 on a 64bit bus if they gave this card 4GB VRAM and use like GDDR5X and gave this card  high bus speed like 256 bit and boosts power limit up to 75W also fix that Drive issues maybe this card can run faster That GTX 1050.   Sources https://www.tomshardware.com/news/first-impressions-of-chinas-glenfly-arise-1020-gpu-arent-great

"Pennsylvania Supreme Court allows authorities to access your search history without a warrant."   The YouTube legal commentator Steve Lehto  posted a story about  :  "Pennsylvania Supreme Court allows authorities to access your search history without a warrant.  Googles fine print may cost you your fouth ammendment rights"   He makes some interesting arguments against this but in at least part of the USA this is the law.   It's always interesting to see how private rights are impacted by EULAs that you really can't avoid.  Who in modern life can avoid an internet search engine EULA or a cell phone OS EULA.  But just by using one you are (according to this judge) waving your rights in regard to the government searching your account history.    Is that's a bit of hyperbole or not.  I recommend listening to this 12 minute article.

China’s Gaming GPU Lisuan G100 Starts Shipping Summary  Lisuan Technology, a Shanghai-based startup founded in 2021 by former Silicon Valley engineers (including ex-S3 Graphics staff), has begun shipping its G100 series discrete GPUs to early customers as of late December 2025. This marks a significant milestone for China’s push toward graphics self-reliance, with mass production underway since September 2025 and broader retail availability expected in Q1 2026.   Quotes Quote A June 2025 Geekbench leak showed dismal scores equivalent to a 2012 GTX 660 Ti, likely due to immature drivers and misreported specs (e.g., low clocks and tiny VRAM). But by July, improved samples with proper configurations outperformed the RTX 4060 in synthetics, trailing newer cards like the RTX 5060 by single digits.                                              While global competition is fierce, the G100’s arrival proves China’s GPU ambitions are turning from announcements into tangible products. Expect more benchmarks soon as units reach reviewers and gamers.   My thoughts  Since This card is Lisuan First GPU,is very clear they have to cost very long time and money to Optimized this card driver to get this card run fastest.   Sources https://signpostnews.com/chinas-gaming-gpu-lisuan-g100-starts-shipping/?amp=1

Rare computer relic confirmed to be major discovery Summary A University of Utah research team’s rare find in a storage closet is being called a huge, historically significant discovery after experts at the Computer History Museum verified its contents.                                      Experts at the museum found the tape was indeed a copy of the UNIX Version 4 operating system, which paved the way for operating systems like macOS.   Before this discovery, they thought this was lost.   Quotes Quote  The team brought the tape back to the university. Once the new engineering building is complete, they plan to have a display for this rare computer relic.   My thoughts  well,we know a thing call Lost Media, and Wikipedia say that is any type of media thought to no longer exist in any format or for which no copies can be located, partial or otherwise. The term primarily encompasses visual, audio, or audiovisual media, such as films, television, radio broadcasts, music, and video games. or for which no copies can be located, partial or otherwise.  [WAN Update] "Deliver App Whistleblower" was a Hoax?   Summary The "Delivery app whistleblower" reddit post that was a WAN topic has turned out to be a hoax powered by AI. The ID badge? AI generated from NBC's contact with them. Uber doesn't have badges. The 18-page document? Red flags in formatting, reading like a cartoon villain's evil plan.     Quotes Quote The user, who did not identify a company by name, claimed that their employer uses predictive modeling to lower drivers’ base pay based on their customers’ tipping habits and that it has a hidden “Desperation Score” for drivers, which tracks how “desperate” they are based on how willing they are to accept low-paying orders. The algorithm, the Reddit user claimed, would save the higher-paying orders for casual drivers to entice them to use the app. As the post gained traction online, its legitimacy also came into question.   Quote Within days, other news outlets reported that the poster, in an attempt to prove their company affiliation, had sent journalists what appeared to be an Uber Eats employee badge. The image of the badge sent to them appeared to be an almost exact copy of the photo the poster had received from NBC News, but the badge included altered details, such as an Uber Eats logo on a background matching the company’s colors. The Verge and Platformer, which both reported having been given the fake badge photo, ran it through Google’s Gemini and found a SynthID watermark identifying it as having been either generated or edited by Google AI.    My thoughts Bad actors will always exist, however AI has made it much easier to generate this content easily. Moreover, it is preying on how we know corporations treat people and customers, "confirming our suspicions".   Sources https://www.platformer.news/fake-uber-eats-whisleblower-hoax-debunked/ https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/06/a

Cory Doctorow on the possibility of freeing the internet from American control Summary Cory Doctorow gave a great talk at 39C3 on the possibility of seizing the moment of American shredding of trade norms to enable the world to break free of the hobbles that American big tech has placed on technology around the world by enforcing trade policies. He presents a real hope that this could help de-enshittify parts of the internet back to some semblance of its old self, and to restore effective ownership of tech and its benefits to individuals rather than megacorporations.   Quotes From the video description: Quote Trump has staged an unscheduled, midair rapid disassembly of the global system of trade. Ironically, it is this system that prevented all of America's trading partners from disenshittifying their internet: the US trade representative threatened the world with tariffs unless they passed laws that criminalized reverse-engineering and modding. By banning "adversarial interoperability," America handcuffed the world's technologists, banning them from creating the mods, hacks, alt clients, scrapers, and other tools needed to liberate their neighbours from the enshittificatory predations of the ketamine-addled zuckermuskian tyrants of US Big Tech. Well, when life gives you SARS, you make sarsaparilla. The Trump tariffs are here, and it's time to pick the locks on the those handcuffs and set the world's hackers loose on Big Tech. Happy Liberation Day, everyone!   My thoughts This is a small, surprising ray of hope coming from a surprising direction, and mostly under the radar. It seems to me it is something that the LTT audience, and especially the WAN show audience, should be enthused about. Doctorow raises a serious hope that something good can be salvaged from the wreckage being created across the world by the current American administration, and that includes specifically rescuing the right to repair, and the r

Tiiny AI Pocket Lab a 65W 190TOPS 80GB poket PC. Summary   Tiiny Ai releases a mini PC with a dNPU and 80GB of LPDDR5X   Quotes Quote Key Specifications: Processor: ARMv9.2 12-core CPU AI Compute Power: Custom heterogeneous module (SoC + dNPU), delivering ~190 TOPS Memory & Storage: 80 GB LPDDR5X + 1 TB SSD Model Capacity: Runs up to 120B-parameter LLMs fully on-device Power Efficiency: 30 W TDP, 65 W typical system power Dimensions & Weight: 14.2 × 8 × 2.53 cm, approx. 300 g, pocket-sized Ecosystem: One-click deployment of dozens of open-source LLMs and agent frameworks Connectivity: Works fully offline; no internet or cloud required The Tiiny AI Pocket Lab will be launched on Kickstarter within the next few months and will retail for $1,399 – pricey for a mini-computer,   My thoughts   The device is interesting, it's like a NAS for AI or like an eGPU. You connect to it, and it provides I suspect a web interface to use the models.   The specs are deficient in some key specs. Memory speed and bus width (I suspect dual channel 128b perhaps 8000). Quantization supported, likely some form of 4 bit quants. Who provides the dNPU.   At first glance it competes with the "AI mini supercomputers" like the AMD AI MAX and Nvidia DGX Spark, but not really.   Nvidia and AMD models use regular shaders (and to a smaller extent some special tensor acceleration that is really hard to use), will run standard pytorch and llama.cpp application as long as the vendor provides the stack for it you can run all the models.   NPU are theoretically much more area efficient and much much more energy efficient at doing tensor operation than regular shaders, for ML workloads. The drawback is you need special software to run acceleration and special software to convert model into the support

Korea communications chief urges Kobaco overhaul as ad market shifts online Summary                                                      Kim Jong-cheol, chairman of South Korea's broadcasting media and communications regulator, urged the Korea Broadcasting Advertising Corporation, known as Kobako to pursue budget efficiency and business restructuring as broadcast advertising continues to weaken and spending shifts to online platforms. Quotes Quote  Kim said Kobaco's management performance evaluation has worsened for three consecutive years and called for introspection. He said Kobaco's performance has fallen about 3 percentage points faster than overall broadcast advertising revenue, adding that the result is "painful" given the generally strong broadcasters Kobaco works with.                            Online advertising has climbed steadily since topping 10 trillion won for the first time in 2023, with 2025 sales estimated at 10.7204 trillion won (about $8.2 billion), according to the survey.   Broadcast advertising continued to decline, falling more than 15% to 3.3898 trillion won (about $2.6 billion) in 2023 from 4.0212 trillion won (about $3.1 billion) in 2022. It slipped another 5% to 3.2191 trillion won (about $2.5 billion) in 2024, or 18.8% of total ad spending, the survey said.Online advertising has climbed steadily since topping 10 trillion won for the first time in 2023, with 2025 sales estimated at 10.7204 trillion won (about $8.2 billion), according to the survey.A 2025 survey on broadcast and telecommunications advertising spending released by the regulator and Kobaco showed online advertising spending reached 10.1011 trillion won (about $7.8 billion) in 2024, accounting for 59% of total ad spending.Kim said structural responses are needed but urged the corporation to focus on measures it can take on its own, including restructuring, to use this year's budget more efficiently.   My thoughts

VR headsets are ‘hope machines’ inside California prisons, offering escape and practical experience Summary  CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (AP) — Jacob Smith has been in prison for two decades, but he and other inmates are still taking regular trips to far-flung, exotic locales. No passport required, just a virtual reality headset.   Quotes Quote The program stems from a prison arts project that Williams ran that incorporated theater, music, poetry, dance and painting. Watching incarcerated people become engaged in artistic pursuits made her wonder about other ways to “bring the outside world inside.”“I went to Thailand, man!” Smith recalled with a grin, describing the first time he strapped on a VR device and was transported to the lush landscapes and bustling markets of Southeast Asia.   A Los Angeles-based nonprofit is bringing the technology to California prisons with the goal of providing inmates a brief escape and, more importantly, exposure to real-world scenarios that will prepare them to reenter society.   My thoughts Well,lf you don't want prisoner escape from jail, and I think it is perfect Solutions for you.   Sources https://apnews.com/article/california-prison-virtual-reality-806a017bc5b232a39f5246280e5ccdfc

How can we stop AI being used to influence important decisions by politicians, police and businesses? Summary  In the UK, Microsoft Co-pilot has been used to create a false report which resulted in the decision to ban Israeli football fans from attending a match last year.  Quotes Quote The report referenced a match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and West Ham that never happened - pressed by MPs last week, Chief Constable Craig Guildford insisted that the force "do not use AI".  However, in a letter to the Home Affairs Select Committee released today, he admits the mistake was the "result of a use of Microsoft Co Pilot"   My thoughts The use of AI seems to be increasingly used more, despite many who use it not understanding the limitations and flaws it has. I see this only getting worse, too much trust is placed in AI and although the output may get better over time, I personally wouldn't ever trust it without a human fact check.  Without AI tools being removed from services that all governments and businesses use, it will always be tempting to use AI to improve productivity or for decision making, especially if a deadline looms.    Sources  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c394zlr8e12t

Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox put out a joint statement on player safety   Summary Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox all release a joint statement regarding player safety detailing ways for parents to protect their children and how the companies partner with ratings companies, law enforcement, special interest groups, and others on such efforts.   Quotes Quote [Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox have] partnered behind the scenes on [player safety] efforts because we can accomplish more when we work toward the same goal. As we continue to invest in, adapt, and amplify our approaches to player safety, we have also evolved our shared principles to ensure they represent our constant efforts to keep our communities safe. Our latest shared principles reflect new innovations in player safety that have evolved with technological advancements, and new ways in which we collaborate through key industry initiatives and with trade associations.   My thoughts This is very unusual to see all three console giants put out a joint announcement like this.  Windows Server now supports NVMe natively! And Windows 11, too, but it might bluescreen. Summary On December 15th, Microsoft announced that Windows Server 2025 will now support NVMe natively. Before NVMe commands needed to be converted into SCSI commands, which caused a substantial performance hit. The new NVMe driver can be enabled via a registry key after the latest cumulative update (2510-B) has been installed.   Some people have found out that the driver can also be enabled in Windows 11. However, this can apparently lead to blue screens or other issues. Whether we will see the feature officially roll out in the near future for regular users hasn't been confirmed yet.   Quotes Quote This improvement comes from a redesigned Windows storage stack that no longer treats all storage devices as SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) devices—a method traditionally used for older, slower drives. By eliminating the need to convert NVMe commands into SCSI commands, Windows Server reduces processing overhead and latency. Additionally, the whole I/O processing workflow is redesigned for extreme performance.       My thoughts Hell yeah! I didn't even know that was still a thing. And seemingly it has quite a substantial performance impact! Can't wait for it to roll out on Windows 11 natively.   Sources https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/windowsservernewsandbestpractices/announcing-native-nvme-in-windows-server-2025-ushering-in-a-new-era-of-storage-p/4477353
