 Meta ordered to pay $375M for misrepresenting children's safety, Meta & Youtube found liable for social media addiction Summary On 24th of March Meta was found to have breached New Mexico's consumer protection laws regarding misleading claims Meta made about the safety of children on their platforms. Meta has been ordered to pay $375 million dollars to the state of New Mexico, the maximum penalty of $5000 per breach (75,000).   On the following day in a separate case in California involving Meta and Youtube the social media giants have been found liable for causing social media addiction. A jury determined that Meta and Youtube intentionally created addictive social media platforms which harmed the mental health of the 20 year old plaintiff. The court has ordered $6 million dollars to be paid with Meta found 70% liable and ordered to pay $4.2M with Youtube found 30% liable and ordered to pay $1.8M.      New Mexico Lawsuit, Violating Consumer Protection laws regarding child safety Quote New Mexico jurors sided with state prosecutors who argued that Meta — which owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp — prioritized profits over safety, and violated parts of the state's Unfair Practices Act. The jury agreed with allegations that Meta made false or misleading statements and also agreed that Meta engaged in "unconscionable" trade practices that unfairly took advantage of the vulnerabilities of and inexperience of children. The social media conglomerate won't be forced to change its practices right away.  UGREEN NASync Kickstarter Disaster: Deceptive Marketing, Broken Servers, and the $2,600 "Interest-Free Loan" for VIPs Hi everyone,   I’ve been a long-time LTT fan and tech enthusiast, but I feel like we need to talk about the ongoing disaster that is the UGREEN NASync Kickstarter launch—and why it’s particularly disappointing to see LMG running UGREEN sponsorships right in the middle of it.   The Context: UGREEN launched their NASync series on Kickstarter this week. They spent months building hype with a "$30 VIP deposit" for a guaranteed early-bird price. However, the launch has been a complete anti-consumer trainwreck:   Broken Infrastructure: For three days straight, their servers and payment APIs were completely non-functional. Thousands of VIPs were locked out of the checkout process for hours, watching "limited" slots disappear while their screens were stuck on infinite loading loops. The $2,600 "Interest-Free Loan": Instead of fixing their system, UGREEN’s "solution" is now forcing VIP customers to pledge the full retail price (approx. $2,600 for the Pro model) as a massive interest-free loan to UGREEN for months. They claim they will refund the difference to the $1,500 VIP price "sometime in May." The September Delay: Because of UGREEN’s own technical failures, many VIPs who were promised early delivery are now being pushed to a "September 2026" shipping tier. The LTT Connection: LTT just ran a sponsored segment for UGREEN in one of their latest video. While I understand ad spots are booked in advance, it feels incredibly tone-deaf to see LMG promote a brand that is currently engaging in what looks like deceptive marketing and "bait-and-switch" tactics on their core audience.  NPM Axios Massive Supply chain attack   Summary A large scale supply chain attack has targeted the developer of AXIOS, A critical back end dependency for web development.    Quotes Quote "Its sole purpose is to execute a postinstall script that acts as a cross-platform remote access trojan (RAT) dropper, targeting macOS, Windows, and Linux," security researcher Ashish Kurmi said. "The dropper contacts a live command and control server and delivers platform-specific second-stage payloads. After execution, the malware deletes itself and replaces its own package.json with a clean version to evade forensic detection."   My thoughts  This is another back end attack meant to target a much wider scale. It is making basic development much more difficult not knowing if the oss dependency packages are compromised forcing developers to either take the risk or spend a lot more time and money writing the code themselves.  discussion question: in the age of ai and vibe coding how much more difficult do things like this make it to maintain security?  Linux now nearly twice as popular as MacOS on Steam Summary Following the conclusion of the March 2026 Steam Hardware survey, we have seen a massive jump in reported Linux users on Steam. The currently reported number is 5.33% (as compared to the 2.35% of OSX users and 92.33% of Windows users). Although this jump seems abnormal, this is likely caused by a long standing bug in the survey where Chinese users were heavily over represented for unknown reasons. The jump in Linux users coensides with a 31.85% DROP in reported users using Simplified Chinese as their primarily language.   Current Results:   Detailed Breakdown of distros: Quotes Quote Steam on Linux ended 2025 at around a 3.5% marketshare, dipped a bit in January, and fell to 2.23% in February. That's still much better than several years ago in the pre-Steam-Deck days when Steam on Linux was at around 1%. In absolute terms with the continued growth of the Steam user base, 2~3% was rather healthy considering all of its bumps over the past decade.   My thoughts For the longest time, the more cynical of the industry has been able to brush off Linux as a niche. But with the combination of the Steam Deck, Bazzite becoming more popular, and perhaps even MacOS being hostile to games lately (no official Vulkan support on M1+ has actually dug their grave for the games industry, no one wants to port to their platform specific API besides for their mobile games), it's going to become harder to ignore. Most games have worked by community effort but I hope these results push studios even further to actually test Proton and resolve bugs that arise when running in that environment. As for anticheat, I have a educated prediction: Someone (as in some anticheat dev) is going to make proper kernel level anticheat for Linux.  LinkedIn is spying on you, according to a new 'BrowserGate' security report Summary LinkedIn is understood to be injecting a JavaScript fingerprinting script into every page load that probes visitors' browsers for 6,236 installed Chrome extensions and collects detailed device telemetry, according to a report by Fairlinked e.V. and independently confirmed by BleepingComputer.    Quotes Quote  The script, which BleepingComputer verified through its own testing, also harvests the CPU core count, available memory, screen resolution, time zone, language settings, and battery status.
